Description

This work was created in response to poetic texts written by Habibah Sheikh, a nomadic performance artist originally from Lebanon, and the curator of the exhibition, Mitli Mitlak (Like You, Like Me). In the text, a character named Ruba experiences the destruction of war firsthand and becomes a refugee in the process. This work uses the imagery of violence to evoke the emotional and physical vulnerability of certain Mediterranean themes...such as being without asylum.

Act 1, Scene 4, Mitli Mitlak (Like You, Like Me):

Ismail: Do you know her?
Ahmad: Yes sir.
Ismail: Who is she?
Ahmad: My friend.
Ismail: What’s her name?
Ahmad: Yasmine.
Ismail: Did you see her die?
Ahmad: No sir.
Ismail: Who killed her?
Ahmad: I don't know, sir.
Ismail: Yes! You know!
Ahmad: No, I don't know!
Ismail: Yes! You said that you knew! Come on! Tell us! Who did it!
(Military sirens/horns are heard in the distance. Ahmad manages to escape and runs away.)
Lokman: We will sing and dance now. That is how I want to go. In ecstasy.
